This was Rossini's last opera in Italian, all operas after 1825 was in French. It would have seemed oddly pretentious if, instead of simply quoting a line of text, I had filled the footnotes at the bottom of each page with snatches of melody set out in musical notation every time I wanted to identify a specific aria. Rossini has attempted to imitate the style of Gluck, and the char acters are, to all intents and purposes, given nothing to portray except bad-temper.

In the original, "le patriotisme d'anti- chambre" a favourite phrase of Stendhal's. But it is precisely when thematic material of this type is badly performed by singers whose voices are incompetent to deal with it*, that we dig right down to that very rock-bottom of mediocrity which is intoler able in any art, and doubly or trebly intolerable in music. He is a believer of the sculpture and soundstaging. Until his retirement in 1829, Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history. Why are there famous English composers of the 18th century but not of the 19th? But any performance of this opera demands a high degree of competence from the orchestra; above all, it requires instrumentalists with a strict sense of rhythm, who can be thoroughly trusted not to falsify the tempo of the music; for this music is very different from the kind whose tunes can be got by heart after a couple of hearings, like the little romance, Cest V amour ^ which is so popular in Paris at the moment, or like the aria Di tantipalpiti ...* from Tancredi.
